  • The Fisher F2 Metal Detector gives you multiple ways to identify whats buried with 8-Segment visual target identification and 4-tone audio I.D.
  • The Fisher F2 Metal Detector features Fast, sensitive target response
  • The Fisher F2 Metal Detector has a LCD screen that uses a 2-digit numeric target value
  • One-touch pinpoint with numeric depth readout
  • Coin depth indicator in motion search mode

The Fisher F2 Control Panel – A LCD screen with all the controls.

In the picture below the Fisher F2 Metal Detector control Panel is shown compared to the control panel of the Garrett Ace 350 Metal Detector below that. While the Fisher F2 gives you all the information you need, I find the Garrett ACE 350's control panel easier to read and understand.

ACE 350 Metal detector by Garrett is powerful and easy to use!

The Instruction Manual for the Fisher F2 Metal Detector Explains everything and you will learn it with time, I still would rather start off with the Garrett ACE 350 if I was a beginner. Farther on down we explain how the Fisher F2 tells you what a target is.

Note that we do like the fact that the Fisher F2 Metal Detector has 4 ways to help you ID what you have found before digging it up:

1) 8 target ID's at the top (ie Iron, Foil, Nickel, Dime Quarter etc,) AND

2) The Fisher F2 Metal Detector gives a numerical value You will quickly learn that a 72 for example might be a dime (making this up it has been several years since i had a detector that used the numbers) and an 88 might be a quarter and a 50 might be GOLD!

3) AND that it gives you the 4 Tones to identify targets

4) AND the Fisher F2 Metal Detector gives the depth of the target.

How the Fisher F2 Metal Detector tells you what you have found:

READING THE DISPLAY (again the Fisher F2 Metal Detector display is the first picture)
The Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) on the Fisher F2 Metal Detector shows the PROBABLE identification of the
targeted metal, as well as the PROBABLE depth of the target, in inches.

The target category will illuminate once the Fisher F2 Metal Detector has an object  best classified,
and it will  stay illuminated until another target is identified.

The Fisher F2 Metal Detector will normally register a repeating, unchanging target identification when a buried target
has been located and identified. If, upon repeated passes over the same spot, the target identification reads
inconsistently, the target is probably a trash item, oxidized metal, or too deep to be classified accurately.  Also,
the greater the distance between the target and the coil, the less accurate the target identification.

The above is true with most metal detectors as well.

Some examples of How the Fisher F2 Metal Detector tells you what you have found are shown below. This is not as accurate as some other detectors but again after using it for a little while you will quickly learn to identify both the display number AND the target category to identify more exactly what is under the ground:

Gold

Gold will register on the Fisher F2 Metal Detector Control panel depending upon its
size. The smaller the gold object, the further to the left it will register.
Gold Flakes will register as Iron (OK  I don't like that. But the number reading combined with the reading should tell you what you've got. But in reality if you are detecting for Gold Flakes or Gold nuggets you really should get a Fisher Gold Bug 2 Metal Detector which is designed for gold detecting. You can click on this link to read our review of the Fisher Gold Bug 2)

Silver

Silver objects will normally register on the Fisher F2 Metal Detector Control panel to the right of the
scale, under Dime, Qtr, or "+" , depending on the size of the object. The larger the object, the farther to
the right it will register. OK Here I would much rather see a "SILVER" indicator.

Dimes Target Category

Dimes and pre-1982 pennies will register on the Fisher F2 Metal Detector Control pane under the "Dime" tab. So that is cool.Older, pre-1982, pennies are composed of copper, which has a metallic signature similar to a dime. Most
copper coins will register here. Steel washers, with an outside diameter similar
to a dime, may also register here.

Quarters Target Category

“Sacawegea Quarters” & “Susan Q. Anthony Dollars” register here.

+ Target Category (this is to the farthest right at the top of the display).

Half-Dollar coins and Silver Dollars register here. Very large iron objects like Sewer Lids will also register here.

The Fisher F2 Metal Detector Review and Buy – WHAT ELSE?

This model comes standard with an external headphone jack. We suggest the Depth master Audio phone II headphone as an option. Headphones let you hear the oldest, deepest targets, block external noises and extend the battery life of your detector.

Hello. On this part of review I don't see this setting on the control panel of the F2. Is it next to the + on the right side? Forgive my poor eyesight.
    ++ Target Category
Half-Dollar coins and Silver Dollars register here.
Thanks! Still learning and I am wanting that first silver dollar so bad!

JC – that is a little bit of a typo. It is just a plus sign + at the far upper right of the F2 screen not a ++.

My eyes are bad too. But I have pretty good glasses.

Also on your computer you can usually press the ctrl key down and then type the plus key twice to zoom in on an object and make it bigger!!
