Metal Detectors for the Beach need to be special for several reasons:
1) Water proof is obviously desirable but really not required for metal detectors for the beach.
But the coil, the round loop that skims along the ground should be waterproof. And if you want to detect underwater a little, it should be neutrally bouyant – ie not hollow and float.
If you intend to keep the metal detector out of the water then they do NOT need to be waterproof. However most of the best finds are found in shallow water (less people detect in the water) so waterproof is a big plus if you can afford it.
