Is the Bounty Hunter Pioneer Ex a Good entry level metal detector?

I don't want to spend more than $125 initially. I saw the Tesoro Compadre on ebay for a little less than that. I also saw a Bounty Hunter Pioneer Ex on Craigslist for $50.

I know that very good detectors can cost much, much more, but are these OK for an initial step into the world of metal detecting?

Thanks for your responses.

The Pioneer Bounty Hunter EX is good in that price range. Watch it with the used one. They may have screwed it up and you may get stuck with a lemon. Better off buying new and having the warranty. Here are the specs on the Bounty Ex:

In a nutshell these will find buried coins and jewlry. They are NOT as exact at locating the exact spot of the treaure so you have to dig more and they lack the visual identification of the target that you get with a better (more expensive) Metal Detector. (the sound changes on this to tell you when you have found something. Different sounds mean different things. With a lot of more expensive detectors you also get a meter and or a visual icon (like a quarter to tell you its a quarter or the word "silver" to tell you you have found something silver).

They also will not fo as deep. But on a limited budget they are a good buy.

Automating the most difficult aspects of metal detecting, the Bounty Hunter Pioneer EX Metal Detector is an easy-to-use detector.
Bounty Hunter Pioneer EX Metal Detector:

  • 4-segment digital target identification
  • Fully-automatic ground balance with squelch-tech
  • Push-button discrimination
  • One touch depth control
  • 3-tone audio target identification
  • Easy view LCD display
  • 7" interchangeable, waterproof search coil
  • Touch pad control panel
  • Comfort hand-grip
  • Extended arm-rest

Summary: I would go with The Garrett ACE 150 – 350 models, or the FIsher F2 or the Whites Coinmaster as my first detector UNLESS this was all I could afford.

Its Ok for a starter but not ideal!
