There are numerous detectors made for archaeology that detect anomolies underground. The first question is if the cash is buried in any type of container. If it is a metal container or container with any metal – NO PROBLEM! Any detector meant for artifact hunting has a no discrimination mode meaning it will beep when it finds anything and it can be used to find the hoard. BUT the next question is how deep, what is the soil like and is it in an area full of other metal like tinfoil, nails and bottle caps or is it in an area with little other trash. Even a very rocky area can be difficult due to various metals in some rocks. You need to make sure that the detector you get is capable of the depth you need. If the stash is in a wide open area and you will have to cover a lot of ground there are deep seeking artifact detectors that are meant to be carried between two people or by one person that cover a wide swath of ground at a time. But the deeper they go and the more ground they cover the more they will cost you.

The Whites Electronics Sierra madre will go down 5 feet deep and is an excellent choice. Cost around $550.
And the whites TM 808 will go 6 – 20 feet underground. But unless there is a good deal of metal – like cash buried in a barrel or a metal safe or box – it may not find it just based upon nails in a wood box.
