Finding a gold ring in the snow with a metal detector…?

I just lost my 14k white gold wedding ring in the snow in/near my Grandfather's large driveway and I was wondering how to find it with a metal detector… Any advice for a total novice? Thanks in advance.

YES! You can use a metal detector in the snow to find a gold ring or car keys or other jewlery!

It will not harm the detector (But don't lay it in the snow unless it is a waterproof model).

IF you know someone with a metal detector it is easier to invite them over to help.
I have never met a metal detector hobbiest who would not love to help someone like this!

How to Guide – Finding a gold ring in the snow with a metal detector…?

If it is not deep snow, more then 5 – 8 inches you can get an inexpensive detector from walmart and it should find it (check out some of the low cost bounty detectors on this site).

If you slide the loop of the detector back and forth across the top of the snow it may not penetrate done far enough in a foot or two of snow. For that you will have to move the head of the detector under the snow which is hard on wet snow or deep snow – even powder.

If you are looking for an object lost in the ground (like a playground sandy area) before the snow fell then be aware that the ground may have frozen and digging for it might be impossible.

Finally, you can do a web search like "Metal detector club" with your city or town name to see if there is a local club that can come help you. Also ask friends. Everyone knows someone with a metal detector!!

To detect gold I think you need an expensive detector.

Most of the ones bought at shops I think can only do base metals like iron or steel.

I could be wrong. I am interested to see what others have to say.
