Teknetics Alpha 2000 Must Know Summary

This is a high quality lower Price Range Metal Detector. It features a digital screen readout (for things Like Target Depth, etc) AND a 3 tone discrimination pattern so you can "Hear" when you have found a good target.

One thing we really like about the Teknetics Alpha 2000 is that it is a true turn on and go Detector. No messing with ground balancing or setting of dials to thresholds.

This makes it great for the New Metal Detector enthusiast or young person on your gift list!

OK so HOW DEEP WILL IT GO?

The first thing anyone asks me about a given Metal Detector is actually 2 things – Will it detect Gold (and the answer is YES) and How deep will it detect. The Alpha 2000  Metal Detector is a very deep detecting metal detector, especially for the beginner price range (under $250). The manufacturer states that tit will detect  a quarter, to a distance of about 9” from the search coil. I would expect the Alpha 2000 to be strong in the 4" to 6" range and that is really good for an inexpensive detector. Large items like a canon ball or antique cast iron clothes iron should be detectable down to 2 feet!

How it ID's a Target (treasure find)

The Teknetics Alpha 2000 Metal Detector uses both AUDIO and VISUAL TARGET IDENTIFICATION:

This  identifies that it has detected finds in the ground  both audibly and visually as follows:
1. As is typical on many detectors this one uses Different pitch tones for different types of metals
2. Also as is standard with modst detectors with an LCD screen this  Metal Detector also uses An illuminated icon within the target category best describing it.

Here it uses Tones to  identify targets as follows:

1) A LOW TONE could be
Ferrous objects, such as iron and steel, like nails and tin cans.
Smallest-sized gold objects and steel bottle caps

2) A MEDIUM TONE is most likely one of the following:
Newer pennies (post-1982 are minted from zinc)
Larger gold pieces, small brass objects, and most bottle screw caps.
Foil, pull-tabs, nickels and most recent-vintage non-US coins.

3) A HIGH TONE indicates:
Silver and copper coins, large brass objects
Older pennies (pre-1982 were minted from copper)
Dimes, quarters, half-dollars, silver dollars
Susan B. Anthony and Sacajawea dollar coins
Flattened aluminum cans (with a stronger signal than a coin)
Audio Target Identification (ATI) classifies metals into three categories.

How the LCD display tells you what you have Found

OK I really like the fact that the Teknetics Alpha 2000 Metal Detector uses both the tone AND the visual ID:

1) The Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) shows the

• PROBABLE identification of the targeted metal, as well as the
• PROBABLE depth of the target in Inches

2) The detector will register a consistent target identification, upon each sweep of the coil,
when a buried target has been located and identified. So if you pass over the object in the ground 2 or 3 times and it says 25c then its a quarter.

3) If, upon repeated passes over the same spot, the target identification reads
inconsistently, the target is probably a trash item, or oxidized metal. With practice, you will
learn to unearth only the repeatable signals.

4) The segment identifications are highly accurate, when detecting the objects
described on the label. However, if an object registers in a given category for an unknown
buried object, you could be detecting a metallic object other than the object described
on the label, but with the same metallic signature.

5) Also, the greater the distance between the target and the coil, the less
accurate the target identification.

How the Treasure detectos LCD Identifies different targets for you:

1) GOLD TARGETS

• Gold objects will register on the left side of the LCD scale.
• Gold flakes will register under iron.
• Small gold items will register under foil
• or 5¢.
• Medium-sized gold items will
• register between 5¢ and Alum.
• Large gold items will register under
• Zinc.

2) SILVER TARGETS:

Silver objects will register to the right of the scale, under Dime,
Qts. or 50¢+.

3) IRON: All but the very largest iron objects will register on the far-left side of the scale. This
could indicate a worthless item such as a nail, or a more valuable historic iron relic.

4) FOIL: Aluminum foil, such as a gum wrapper, will register as foil. A small
broken piece of pull tab may also register here.

5) NICKEL: Most newer pull-tabs from beverage cans, the type intended to stay attached to the
can, will register here. Many gold rings will also register here.

6) PT: Older pull tabs, which always detached completely from the can, register here.  Many medium size gold ring also register here.

7) ZINC: Newer US pennies (post-1982), and Canadian $1 and $2 coins register here. Many
non-US coins of recent vintage will also register here.

DIME: Dimes and older copper pennies (pre-
1982) register here.

9) 50¢+ Qts: Quarters register here, Silver Dollars, Half-Dollars and very large iron
objects, like a sewer lid, will register here.

Caution: The target indications are visual references. Many other types of metal can fall
under any one of these categories. While the detector will eliminate or indicate the presence
of most common trash items, it is impossible to accurately classify ALL buried objects.

DEPTH INDICATOR: The Depth Indicator is accurate for coin-sized objects. It indicates
the depth of the target, in inches. Large and irregularly-shaped objects will yield
less reliable depth readings

When passing over an object, the indicators will light up and stay illuminated for three
seconds. If the depth indication varies with each sweep, try sweeping at different angles;
there may be more than one target present.

With practice, you will learn the difference between accurate readings, multiple targets,
and highly erratic readings which evidence rash or irregularly shaped objects.

OK So here is Our review of the New Garrett ACE 350 Metal detector (Thanks to Eric for loaning me his new one for this review).

But wait there is more ! The Garrett Ace 350 Metal Detector also has Accept/Reject targeting!

Ok this is really cool. With accept or reject targeting you can change the programming of the Garrett Ace 350 Metal Detector to ignore specific types of targets. For example lets say you are detecting at an old park but it has a lot of old bottle caps that you keep wasting time on. All You do is press a button and tell the detector to reject any item exactly like this from now on and POOF no more bottle caps are detected BUT the Garrett Ace 350 Metal Detector will still continue to detect everything else it had before.

Accepting Targets: Suppose you are looking for a gold earring lost at the beach. Just teach the Garrett Ace 350 Metal Detector to accept only the earring and then you can search for only that lost item without stopping to dig miscellaneous items. Or you only want silver coins and don't care for modern clad coins teach the Garrett Ace 350 Metal Detector to accept what you want and reject what you don't want and focus on finding the Treasure that has true value!

A lot of beginners won't start off using this but once you have been detecting a while I guarantee that you will!! This used to be just the high end detectors not at the lower price points like this! This is a great great great feature!

You can still program your own if you want. And yes that can be real handy if you are digging for relics at the site of an old house where the ground is loaded with nails. Set the detector to reject that signal and off you go!

Number 2 of what I liked best about the Garrett Ace 350 was the Control Panel:

The control panel of the Garrett Ace 350 Metal Detector pictured below is easy to read with all the information you need to find buried coins, jewelry, silver, gold, etc while not wasting a ton of time digging up junk!

I like the coin depth gauge to the right. This really helps with knowing how deep to dig or probe a target. With my tests this was dead on accurate except for a big target. I put a $1 dollar Ike coin 4 inches down and it came up as 2 inches down. All the other coins and ring tests were accurate on depth and targeting. NICE!

I have updated this based on recent tests:

Rings - I tested several gold rings (air tested) and the rings were solid and clearly "found" at depths from 4 – 6 inches depending upon the size and amount of metal in the ring. I was running the test with the detector at near full power.

Coins – The Coin depth was from 4.5 inches – 8 inches. The 4.5 inches was on a dime and the 8 inches on a half dollar. I have run tests with buried dimes pennies and quarters and the results were mixed with almost lal of them falling within this range depending on if the coin was flat or on edge, etc. But Workin the detector like I would while hunting I was able to actually find the coins DEEPER then I did on my air test. I think that is because I move the detector slower and listen more carefully when detecting and when you " air test" (wave a coin back and fourth in from t of the coil in the air) you tend to move your hand much quicker and a little more inconsistantly then you sweep the detector when detecting.

Summary: The Garrett Ace 350 Metal Detector is a winner at this price point it is just a great deal. Most $200 detectors don't have half these features

If you are tired of Metal Detectors that take an engineering degree to operate and a harvard education to get thru the owners manual then you will love the Garrett Infinium LS MEtal Detector. It goes deep, woks great and the Garrett Infinium LS has basically 3 controls!

NOTE: Easy does not mean turn it on and go and never adjust anything. This machine has to be frequency adjusted IF the tone is unstable both due to EMI and/or on hot ground to get an absolutely smooth threshold.

Here are the control instructions straight from the owners manual:

Power
Used to turn on the detector and to choose slow, lock or fast Automatic Ground Track. A battery check
occurs automatically each time the power is switched on.

Audio Threshold Adjustment
Used to set the base audio level according to an individual's hearing requirements. The Threshold
Adjustment may also be used to help mask outside noise. Typically, the sound is set no louder than

And there is No 3 dimensional LCD screen, no programming, heck no lcd screen at all> So if you feel you have to tinker and program to get a detector to work the way its supposed to then stop right here. Maybe Check out a Whites MXT instead (not bashing Whites, I love their detectros, but they do allow you to adjust everything and anything and they are complex – to me anyhow).

There are 30 pages in the owners manual but they could have cut it down to 10. Half of it is the easy nuts and bolts assemply

Garrett Infinium LS Metal Detector Review – Pulse Induction

First off this is a Pulse Induction Metal detector – Wikopedia has the best definition of a Pulse Induction Metal Detector that I could find:

"the pulse induction machine simply fired a high-voltage pulse of signal into the ground. In the absence of metal, the pulse decayed at a uniform rate, and the time it took to fall to zero volts could be accurately measured. However, if metal was present when the machine fired, a small current would flow in the metal, and the time for the voltage to drop to zero would be increased. These time differences were minute, but the improvement in electronics made it possible to measure them accurately and identify the presence of metal at a reasonable distance. These new machines had one major advantage: they were completely impervious to the effects of mineralization, and rings and other jewelry could now be located even under highly-mineralized"

If you do not have mineralized soil conditions you loose some of the benefits of this detector.

1) Get Garrett Infinium LS Metal Detector  for Nugget hunting and relic hunting in mineralized soil conditions.

2) Get something like the Garrett Sea Hunter for salt water if thats all you want to do – its a little easier and more stable in the surf .

3) If you want BOTH Surf AND Nugeet or relic then get the Infinium!

4) For normal Soil conditions Choose a regular (high quality) VLF detector.

If you want to find the best treasure, you need to do a little research and find places to metal detect that no one else has.

AND you may want to expand your horizons from hunting loose change and Jewelry to Artifacts like civil war relics, settler relics, etc!

Do some research

Believe it or not this can be fun AND a great way to spend some rainy day time or cold winter time.

Here are 3 great ways to research places to Metal Detect:

1) Talk to some of the "old Folks" in town.

• ask them where the fair grounds USED to be.
• Ask them where people you to get together for picnics.
• Ask them where the old swimming hole was.
• Ask them if there are any abandoned town or housing site.
• Ask them if there are any old army bas e sites
• Ask them if there are any old abandoned scout camps.

2) Go to the Library

• Ask the librarian for books about the town and county from 50 -1 00 years ago! THESE ARE GOLD MINES!
• Read the books and WRITE DOWN places and things that once were that may be no more!
• You could then get a county map or go online and get a map and figure out where they were and go detecting.
• Or ask people if they know where these places were
• OR you could do it the modern way and go on Google Earth and find if there are any visible 'remains' (Foundations, roads, etc can be visible, even if they are now under a foot or more of earth!

3) Go On Line

• Search on your town name
• Search on your county name like "Douglas County History" or Old Douglas County Schools or Old Douglas County Camp
• Take notes! OR print out as much info as you can. The more information the better!
• Then go about trying to locate the places you have found.

Once You come up with a place to go metal detecting now PLAN AND GO!

Access

• Get permission. Be nice. Explain the hobby. Most people will say yes.

Be Prepared for unexpected changes

• If the site is 50 -1 00 years old it may have changed
• Trees or new buildings may be there but remember any open space at all is worth checking because chances are no one else has!!
• If it is an old spot you may want a small long handled trowel or foldable shovel (DON'T march in with a full sized shovel and pick ax over your shoulder you will probably get booted out). Cover up any holes you do eventually dig!

Think like the people who were using the place that you researched!

When you get to the site and identify your search area, don't just stick close to buildings.

• Stone walls for climbing by schools or camps.
• Large very old trees for sitting under near old factories.
• Open fields for playing games on near camps or in old parks. IF the trees have overgrown the area a large area of younger trees will indicate an area that was once field.

Learn Some solid metal detecting techniques

• Pick an area and search it methodically mark a section using any perimeter objects like trees or buildings and search that section entirely before moving on.
• IF it is an old site work slowly as the treasure or relics could be down deep.
• Where a pair of headphones to hear the faint signals.
• Decrease discrimination or go to no discrimination (Yes you will here every target and dig a lot of junk like nails etc but you will find artifacts you never would have known ere their otherwise).
• Where a carpenters type of waist tool belt with large pockets. Put all the trash you find on one side (Don't just throw a piece of junk metal or you will find it again!) and good finds on the other.
• Make a little map and keep it in your carpenters belt. Mark the location of especially good finds. Over time you may create a visual area of where you should be hunting by the increased frequency of finds or how they are clustered.
• Always rescan a hole after pulling out trash OR treasure. There may be something better lurking beneath but hidden by the signal of the other. I Know a guy whole pulled out a jar full half full of silver coins but he almost didn't dig it up because the top half of the jar was old toy metal soldiers and it showed up as junk on his detectors fancy LCD screen!!!

Don't Rush and don't give up

• You may not find any relics straight away.
• You may hit modern pull tabs or junk
• You may initially find nothing
• But it all could be because you are just not in quite the right spot.
• If you check one area and have had enough DO GO BACK ANOTHER DAY and check another area!

The Garrett Ace 250 Metal Detector Review – Features

The first thing everyone wants to know is "How deep will the detector find treasure"? well that depends upon the treasure, how big it is, the soil its in, etc.

You can expect the Ace 250 to find coins from 4 – 8 inches down in the soil.

The Ace 250 will find rings from 2 – 6 inches down depending on the size of the ring and how it is laying in the ground. Some rings are very thin and don't contain much metal, others have a "signiture" like that of a pulltab or piece of foil so often people think its "junk" and don't dig it!

The ACE 250 will find gold jewlery and coins at the depths listed above BUT when it comes to gold nuggets and flakes I would expect it (based upon tests) to find them only down to aboiut 2 inches. Our Opinion of Whites Spectra V3i Metal detector

Negatives:

1. It is complicated and there is a lot to learn.
2. The instruction manual is 63 pages long – a lot to learn
3. I have read a number of reports on defective machines that drove their owners nuts until they returned it to whites and were given a free replacement (So that is a Bad AND a good thing. Good job by whites making things right).
4. Also from being with my friend while we hunted with his machine it can get real chatty in trashy areas AND get interference when in the city around a lot of Rf devices (we were in Omaha and in one area the detector really did not work well. We used a feature on the detector that told us there was a lot of interference).
5. Cost – expect to pay around $1500

Positives- Our top 10 List

1. The discrimination and depth combination is fantastic.. While hunting with my friends V3i we found a small silver ring (looked like a pinky ring or a toe ring next to a picnic table. The V3i detected it out of a ton of trash. As he slowly moved the coil we could see it register foil, iron, etc., etc. silver, foil, iron. We dug the silver target. The meter said it was 7 inches down. We found the silver ring almost 7 inches down! About a half inch to the left was pull tab and to the right a rusted old bottle cap.  that is why that was still there. Anybody else detecting using a lesser detector would have either seen junk or nothing at all and missed it.

2. WE LOVE the wireless headphones.

3. The Whites Spectra V3i Metal Detector is like operating a PC.  It even has built in help screens and an onboard help manual!

12. Its greatest strength is a byproduct of its major weakness – its complexity. You can customize and fine tune this machine to the absolute optimum efficiency for wherever you are and whatever yo are hunting.
13. The V3i transmits and receives on 3 separate frequencies. This makes it possible for the spectra V3i to , well here is how white's puts it::

"....the V3i transmits at 2.5kHz, 7.5kHz, and 22.5kHz, making it simultaneously “hot” on silver, relics, and gold. Single frequency
detectors are unable to have peak performance over such a wide range of targets. This is an advantage
not only in detecting desirable targets, but also in discriminating out undesirable targets. So multi-frequency
detectors get excellent depth over a much wider range of targets, and do a better job of identifying
targets. But Spectra V3i can also beat single frequency detectors at their own game: V3i has the ability to
run in single frequency mode using any of its three frequencies, and the transmit waveform is optimized to
put all the energy into that one frequency. So if you want to hunt for only deep silver or only gold jewelry,
V3i can be optimized for these tasks."

Whites Spectra V3i Metal Detector Review – Basic Guide

I have tried to improve it by organizing it a little better and adding a few screen shots.

Assemble, Power Up and Start Hunting -> how easy is it to start hunting?

The assembly of the V3i is simple and is just attaching the coil, doing a few screws etc.

The rechargeable battery pack takes 4 hours but you can use a pack of regular akaline AA cells (8) in the meantime if you just can't wait.

After following the assembly instructions, and with a fresh battery pack installed, press the ON / OFF button. You’ll see the startup screen with the White’s Logo and a battery voltage check. Pull the trigger switch. You’re now hunting in the selected program.

There are actually 4 steps in the instruction manual for starting hunting,. They are:

1. Press ON/OFF: When first turned on the Spectra display shows the battery condition, (owner details) if registered, ARROW DOWN for more information about the detector and general features.
2. Option – press ZOOM to select the size of text that best suits your eyesight and preference. Larger size text slightly changes display arrangements or feature positions.
3. Squeeze and release the Trigger on the handle grip.
4. Ground Balance – Squeeze and hold the Trigger press and hold the ENTER button, pump the search coil(loop) over the ground (1-12 inches) until the background hum becomes steady, release ENTER and then release trigger and begin searching.

Use the MENU Button

Use The ENTER Button

From the MENU screen, the ENTER button selects the menu item to be viewed. From a Live Control, the ENTER button shows the current settings for that particular control. Use the ENTER button to select / deselect those items with a “box”. EG: Change VDI Accept / Reject settings, Enable / Disable Tone ID, VCO, etc.

What are the "live Controls" and how do you Use The Live Controls?

Live Controls – across the bottom of the display offer quick and easy “on the fl y” adjustment of all common
metal detector features. Use ARROW LEFT & RIGHT to highlight a feature, then ARROW UP & DOWN to adjust
it or ENTER to turn it ON/OFF. No need to enter a MENU. Adjustments are instant, like having knobs! Another
White’s innovation..

Use The ZOOM Button

With the selected Live Control display active, Press ZOOM to view additional settings / options that may be available for the selected Live Control. EG: Select Live Control AUDIO LEVELS with the R-L ARROW KEYS and press ENTER. You’ll see the current Volume and Threshold settings. Press ZOOM and you’ll go to the next menu level containing Search Audio, Pinpoint Audio and Wireless Headphones.

Using the UP / DOWN Arrow Keys, select the control you wish to view / modify and press ENTER. You’ll see the next menu level.

TIP: If you just want to see what controls are available under each menu item, simply select it and push the trigger forward. You’ll get a “Help Balloon” showing the available controls.

Use The ARROW Keys

The ARROW keys are used to navigate the screen and menu functions. Right, Left, Up, Down.

The ARROW keys will also move the “slider controls” for those functions that have them such as Recovery Delay and S.A.T. speed.

Use The Trigger Switch

The TRIGGER switch has three (3) positions. Center is the normal search mode. Pulled puts VX3 in the All Metal Pinpoint Mode and deactivates S.A.T. Locked Forward has two functions. In the search mode, moving the trigger to the forward position will activate the selected Analysis mode. When used in conjunction with the menu functions, moving the trigger will forward will cause a “Help Balloon” to be displayed which contains additional information about the selected function.

The VDI Numbers and other basic treasure hunting info on the LCD interface:

Remember the picture from above that showed some of the LCD screen info. here it is again to help you understand this section:

Within the yellow / tan rectangle which dominates the display
important target indications are provided;

• A small target reference number scale VDI (Visual Discrimination Indication numbers) from -95-0-+95
are listed. -95 to 0 represents the negative (ferrous) or magnetic target range (most iron and steel). +1 to +95
represents the conductive (nonferrous) target range (most precious metals). The VDI number will vary depending
upon the exact characteristics of the metal itself. These VDI numbers are the same reference numbers the Spectra
uses to accept or reject different target types, especially important when customizing the Discrimination.

The current target VDI number appears much larger above the rectangle upper left side of display. Listen
for a solid repeatable (over multiple search coil passes) audio “beep” then look for a consistent Icon and/or VDI
number indicating a good quality metal target.

• While sweeping the search coil metal targets will produce blocks above the -95-0-+95 metal range for
each frequency currently in use. Their position in relation to the -95-0-+95 range will indicate the electrical characteristics
(target signature) of the metal itself, which is based on the exact metal alloy and size.

In the COIN & JEWELRY Program rejected VDI range blocks appear in RED, Accept VDI range blocks appear
in Green. Taller and narrower block patterns indicate higher quality metal alloys. Top block (always the highest
frequency) represents 22.5 kHz, center blocks 7.5 kHz, and bottom blocks (always the lowest frequency) 2.5 kHz.
Typically gold and nickel respond better / stronger at 22.5 kHz, brass better / stronger at 7.5, and silver/copper better
/ stronger at 2.5 kHz. Noting which line of blocks fades last (lingers longest) is a further indication of the targets
likely alloy.

Multiple targets near each other can be tricky. When unusual variations are noticed, sweep the area from
several different directions and/or hold the toggle on the grip and “X” the area to check for multiple targets. Then
sweep each separately and note audio and display.

ICONs – In combination with the VDI number and target signature blocks, an ICON will appear above the
rectangle in the upper right side of display, and a large VDI (visual discrimination indication or reference number)
that represents that range will appear on the upper left side of the display. Some variation is expected from one
search coil sweep to the next. However, overall consistency over several sweeps will produce an accurate indication
of the metal alloy. Multiple targets near each other can be tricky. When unusual variations are noticed, sweep
the area from several different directions, hold the toggle, to check for multiple targets.

• Sweep the search coil close to the ground, scrubbing in grass, an inch above rocky, sandy, or coarse
grounds, from side to side, overlapping each pass by 50%. Avoid arching at the end of each sweep, maintain about
two seconds per pass from left to right and about two seconds returning from right to left. The search coil must
remain in motion for metals to respond.

• Ignore the display and listen for a solid sounding, repeatable audio “BEEP” upon several passes of the
search coil. Ignore inconsistent, or broken sounds. Solid, repeatable “BEEPs”, after multiple passes indicate a
metal target of interest.
• Then look at display. Once a solid and repeatable “BEEP” has been located, sweep over it several times,
and look at the display. A narrow tall bar graph in a desired range plus the large VDI number in the upper left side
of display, and a desired target ICON will indicate a good metal target worth digging.

Open A New Program

From the PROGRAM Live Control, simply press ENTER. Select the program you wish to load using the UP / DOWN Arrow Keys to load the selected program.

Create A Custom Program

Simply change any setting you wish using the Live Controls or ZOOM Menu. When you turn power OFF using the ON / OFF switch, the program will be saved with all your changes. It will have the same name as the factory program you modified, with a triangle in front of the name.

After making a change to a setting, if you want to save it as the default, simply press and hold ENTER, then press MENU. That single change will be saved as a default.
If you want to make all your changes the default for the current program, select the program name in the Program menu. With the name highlighted, press and hold ENTER, then press MENU. Select SAVE AS Defaults and all your changes will be saved. Y
You can restore all the defaults previously selected at this menu as well.

Load My Custom Program

After you’ve created and saved your personal settings, V3i will select that version of the program to run. EG: If you modified and saved the C&J program, every time you select the C&J program, your custom settings will be applied.

Restore A Program To Saved Defaults

Select the Program Live Control and select the program you wish to restore. Press and hold the ENTER key, then press MENU. Select Restore Defaults. Your selected default settings for that program will be restored.

Restore A Program To Factory Settings

To restore a custom program to factory settings;

• Press MENU twice then ENTER to access EXPERT MENU
• Select Program and Press ENTER
• Select RESTORE / LOAD and press ENTER
• Using the UP / DOWN ARROW keys, select the program you wish to restore
• Press MENU / TAB to access the Restore From Menu
• Select Library Program
• Use the RIGHT / LEFT arrow keys to select the settings you want to restore to
• Press MENU / TAB – See LOAD selected
• Press Enter – The selected program is restored to the selected settings
• Pull the trigger switch to continue hunting

Change the Backlight Setting

Select the BACKLIGHT Live Control and press ENTER. Use the UP / DOWN arrow keys to select the brightness you prefer.

Set the Target and Threshold Volume and Target Tone

Select the AUDIO LEVELS / TONE Live Control and press ENTER. Use the ARROW keys to select / set the desired Target and Threshold volumes and Target Tone.

Set the RXG, AM, DS Sensitivity

Select the SENSITIVITY Live Control and press ENTER. Use the ARROW keys to select / set the desired Receiver Gain (RXG), All Metal (AM) and Discriminate (DS) sensitivity. Remember – RXG controls the signal from the coil to the box, and affects both AM and DS sensitivity. AM sensitivity is the pinpoint / non-motion sensitivity. DS is the motion sensitivity.

Set the Discrimination Pattern (VDI Accept / Reject)

Select the DISC Live Control and press ENTER. Use the UP / DOWN ARROW keys to select the VDI you wish to change. Press ENTER to change the Accept / Reject status of that VDI.

TIP: If you wish to change a RANGE of VDIs, simply select the starting VDI and the Accept / Reject criteria you wish to set across a range of VDIs. Press and HOLD ENTER. Using the UP / DOWN ARROW keys, move through the range of VDIs you wish to set. This will change each VDI in the range to selected status.

Select Frequency Modes and Offsets

Select the FREQUENCY Live Control and press ENTER. Use the ARROW keys to select the desired Frequency Mode and Offset.

Select Best Data / Correlate Mode

Select the FREQUENCY Live Control and press ENTER. Use the ARROW keys to select either Best Data or Correlate mode.

TIP: If you’re in a high EMI environment select pinpoint mode and adjust the frequency offset for the quietest operation.

Enable / Disable AutoTrac and Select Trac Speed / Offset

Select the GROUND TRACKING Live Control and press ENTER. Use the ARROW keys to select Autotrac (tracking enabled) or Locktrac (tracking locked). Use the ARROW keys to select Offset and Speed.

Select Normal / Salt Soil Type

Select the GROUND TRACKING Live Control and press ENTER. Use the ARROW keys to select either Normal / Salt soil type.
Tip: Salt Comp mode always selects SALT soil type.

Select Ground Filters

Select the GROUND FILTER Live Control and press ENTER. Use the ARROW keys to select the desired Band Pass or High Pass filter. (5Hz, 7.5Hz, 10.Hz or 12.5Hz).
Tip: Select a BANDPASS filter for best operation in a HIGH EMI environment.

Select The Live Controls I Want To Use

Press the MENU button twice to select the EXPERT Menu. Press ENTER.
Arrow down to Configure and press ENTER.
Arrow down to LIVE CONTROLS and press ENTER.
Select EXTEND and press ENTER.
Select ORDER and press ENTER.

There is no question that the Garrett GTI 2500 control panel is polarizing. It is a "Love it" or "Hate It" type of thing. At the end of the day the reality to me is that it gives you more information about your target and that is a good thing. I think back to my first machine which only had a tone and how over time you could tell that a clear light high pitch tone was a small coin buried deep. With this machine, with time, you will be able to glance at the control panel and listen to the sound and  know with a high degree of certainty what you have or don't have under the ground beneath the coil. You get the depth both on the Graphic target image but also on a bar across the top. You get the Target identification identified across the top and you compare that with the Graphic Target Imaging to make the True ID. For example if the Target Id says it s a quarter but the Graphic Image System shows it as a large object 12 inches down then you can be certain it is NOT a quarter and then decide if you want to dig this larger mystery object This could lead to a much higher recovery rate of quality finds because you will dig less junk and dig more quality targets.

The Control panel is complex but it provides information that the competitors do not.

Read some of the reviews online. The amount of complaints on quality and small target depth is concerning for a high end machine.

BUT there are plenty of all star reviews to. Before deciding to plunk down $900 on a detector spend the time and read as many reviews as possible,

Make sure it is suited to how you want to detect and where you will be detecting. You should ask yourself the following:

1) What is your personal preference? Do you want an easy to use machine or a more high performance machine that may take many hours of learning (I prefer the easy to use high performance myself).

2) What do you spend most of your time Metal Detecting for? If the answer is gold nuggets then buy a gold nugget machine Like the Fisher Gold Bug 2.

3) Where do you spend most of your time detecting? IF the answer is the beach then maybe you should be looking at a machine designed for beach or even underwater.
